University of the Arts London | Cecil Lewis Sculpture Scholarship

The Cecil Lewis Sculpture Scholarship is available to one home or international student accepted on the MA Fine Art course either at Chelsea College of Arts, MA Fine Art: Sculpture course at Camberwell College of Arts, or the MA Fine Art course at Central Saint Martins. It is the only current scholarship specifically for three-dimensional work at UAL.

The Cecil Lewis Sculpture Scholarship was created by Cathy in the name of her late father Cecil in 2007. The selection panel is comprised of UAL Heads of Department, and a well known practising artist. The judges have included Richard Deacon, Haroon Mirza, Laura Ford, Richard Wilson, Jodie Carey, Richard Wentworth, Jeff Lowe, Brian Griffiths and the co-Director of Pangaea Sculptors’ Centre, Lucy Tomlins.

The Scholarship supports postgraduate students in financial need with their studies.

Yoshitaka Iwamoto

Yoshitaka Iwamoto is a Fine Artist from Tokushima, Japan and a Cecil Lewis Sculpture Scholarship alumni from 2010.

”In my university days, I was captivated by the timeless beauty of stone carving, mastering the art of representational sculpture and the nuances of realistic expression. From there, I ventured into the realm of contemporary art at the prestigious University of the Arts London, where I honed my skills in crafting intricate glassworks. My artistic philosophy revolves around breaking free from the constraints of traditional artistic expression and unleashing my own unique vision onto the world.

As of late, I've been pouring my heart and soul into the creation of conceptual glassware and sculptural pieces that are as much a feast for the eyes as they are for the senses. Drawing inspiration from the Mingei philosophy that flourished in Japan during the early 1900s and the ancient Pâte de Verre casting technique, I'm constantly exploring the untapped potential of modern glass art.” - Yoshitaka Iwamoto
